A nursing pillow accompanies you for many months: first as a support pillow during pregnancy, then while breastfeeding, and later as a cozy nest for your baby. To ensure it fulfills these tasks well, it's worth taking a look at three things before purchasing – size, filling, and cover.
The Size: long enough for pregnancy and breastfeeding
For side sleeping, the pillow should reach from your belly to between your knees. Our XXL nursing pillow measures 190 cm on the outer curve and 145 cm on the inner curve, with a thickness of about 30 cm and ends of about 20 cm. This way, it supports your belly, back, and knees during pregnancy and relieves your arms, shoulders, and back while breastfeeding. With the two ties at the ends, you can tie it together into a baby nest.
The Filling: Kapok instead of polyester or Styrofoam
Many nursing pillows are filled with polyester wadding, EPS, or Styrofoam. Kapok, on the other hand, is a natural fiber from the fruits of the kapok tree. The fine fibers have a natural wax layer and trap a lot of air: they are lightweight, breathable, and wick moisture away, preventing dampness. Each Minky Mooh nursing pillow contains 1.5 kg of kapok, hand-filled in Germany. You can remove or add filling through the zipper.
The Cover: Organic cotton, removable and washable
Look for a cover that can be removed and washed. Our covers are made from GOTS-certified organic cotton, tested according to Oeko-Tex® Standard 100. They are available in smooth percale (washable at 60 °C) or soft knit (washable at 30 °C). With a replacement cover, you always have a fresh one on hand while the other is in the wash.
Care: wash the cover, air out the kapok
The kapok filling should not go in the washing machine – water and detergent would wash out the natural wax layer, causing the fibers to clump. To refresh it, simply air the pillow out in the sun.
